Maedate incorporates the name –shape found on Japanese armour crests, symbolising lineage and power. Maedate’s contrast between the rough and soft, white and black leathers encased in the sleek, reflective aluminium mirrors the perceptual duality of the larger sculptures. The encased horns, protruding due to their original conic shape, emphasise the balance of natural and industrial textures, and along with the colour scheme, suggest an underlying equality between the two sides, though they remain separate and opposed. This unified totality’s symmetry and refinement exudes the intimidation for which the maedate was originally conceived in Japan.
