Maedate incorporates the name and shape found on Japanese armour crests, symbolising lineage and power.

The contrast between rough and soft textures, and between white and black leather encased in sleek, reflective aluminium, mirrors the perceptual duality of the artist’s larger sculptures.

The encased horns protrude because of their original conic shape, emphasising the balance between natural and industrial materials. Together with the colour scheme, they suggest an underlying equality between two sides that nevertheless remain separate and opposed.

This unified totality, with its symmetry and refinement, evokes the intimidation for which the maedate was originally conceived in Japan.
